What Size Curtains Do I Need?
When choosing curtains, it's important to get the right size to ensure they frame your windows properly and create the desired effect in your room. Here's a guide to help you determine the correct size curtains for your windows:
1. Measure the Width of Your Window:
Use a tape measure to determine the width of your window from one side to the other, including any molding or trim. This measurement will give you the minimum width for your curtains.
2. Determine the Length:
Decide where you want the curtains to fall, such as to the sill, below the sill, or to the floor. For a more traditional look, curtains should touch the floor. For a more modern look, you can choose to hang them shorter.
3. Factor in Extra Fabric:
Add extra fabric to the width and length measurements to create fullness and ensure the curtains gather properly when drawn. The amount of extra fabric you need will vary depending on the type of curtain heading and the desired fullness. Generally, a fullness of 2 to 2.5 times the window width is recommended.
4. Consider the Curtain Heading:
The curtain heading refers to the way the curtains are attached to the curtain rod. Different headings require different amounts of extra fabric:
- Grommet or Eyelet: 8-12 inches of extra width
- Rod Pocket: 3-6 inches of extra width
- Tab Top: 6-9 inches of extra width
- Pinch Pleat: 2.5-3 times the window width
- French Pleat: 2-2.5 times the window width
5. Add Extra Length:
For floor-length curtains, add 4-6 inches of extra length to the desired length to compensate for shrinkage and uneven floors.
Example:
If your window measures 48 inches wide and you want floor-length curtains with a 2.5x fullness and pinch pleat heading:
- Width: 48 inches x 2.5 = 120 inches (plus 8-12 inches for heading)
- Length: 96 inches (desired length) + 4-6 inches (extra length) = 100-102 inches
So, you would need curtains that are approximately 120-124 inches wide and 100-102 inches long.
