How To Measure Window Curtains

Measuring window curtains accurately is essential for a perfect fit and a polished look. Whether you're hanging curtains for the first time or replacing old ones, following the correct steps will ensure that your curtains fall beautifully and frame your windows with style.

Step 1: Determine Curtain Style

Before measuring, decide on the style of curtains you want. This will affect how you measure the width and length. Common curtain styles include:

  • Rod-pocket curtains: Slide onto a curtain rod through a sewn-in pocket at the top.
  • Grommet curtains: Have metal rings sewn into the fabric, which slide onto a rod.
  • Tab-top curtains: Have fabric loops sewn into the top, which hook onto curtain rings on a rod.

Step 2: Measure Window Width

Measure the width of the window frame, including any trim or molding. For outside-mount curtains (mounted outside the window frame), add 6-12 inches to allow for overlap on both sides.

Step 3: Determine Curtain Length

The desired curtain length depends on your personal preference and the style of the room. Here are some options:

  • Floor-length curtains: Extend to the floor, creating a luxurious and formal look.
  • Puddle curtains: Extend 6-12 inches beyond the floor, creating a dramatic and opulent effect.
  • Sill-length curtains: End just below the windowsill, providing a clean and contemporary look.
  • Apron-length curtains: Hang just below the apron (the molding below the windowsill), creating a cozy and traditional look.

Step 4: Measure Curtain Length

For rod-pocket curtains, measure from the top of the curtain rod to the desired length (determined in Step 3).

For grommet and tab-top curtains, measure from the top of the curtain ring to the desired length.

Add 2-4 inches to the length for the hem.

Step 5: Purchase Curtains

Use the measurements you've taken to purchase curtains in the appropriate size and style. Remember to consider the fullness factor (how much fabric the curtains gather when drawn), typically around 2-3 times the window width.

Tips:

  • Use a metal tape measure for accurate measurements.
  • Measure the window in multiple places to ensure consistency.
  • Consider the height of the ceiling and the furniture placement when determining the curtain length.
  • If you're not sure about the measurements, it's better to err on the side of having slightly longer curtains that can be hemmed.
