How To Measure A Curtain

Measuring for curtains is an important step in getting the perfect fit. The correct measurements will ensure that your curtains hang properly and look their best. Here are the steps on how to measure for curtains:

Step 1: Determine The Curtain Length

To determine the curtain length, you need to decide where you want the curtains to end. There are three common options:

  • Floor-length: The curtains should touch the floor, but not puddle on it.
  • Puddle-length: The curtains should puddle on the floor by a few inches.
  • Apron-length: The curtains should end just below the windowsill.

Once you have decided on the desired length, measure from the top of the curtain rod to the desired length. Add 4 to 6 inches to this measurement to account for the hem and the header. This will give you the total curtain length.

Step 2: Determine The Curtain Width

To determine the curtain width, measure the width of the window. Then, add 12 to 16 inches to this measurement for overlap and fullness. This will give you the total curtain width.

Step 3: Determine The Rod Length

The rod length is the width of the window plus 6 to 12 inches. This will allow the curtains to extend beyond the window on either side, providing better coverage and a more polished look.
