How To Make Blackout Curtains

Blackout curtains are a great way to block out light and create a dark, relaxing space. They are perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, and media rooms. You can buy blackout curtains, but they can be expensive. If you are on a budget, you can easily make your own blackout curtains at home.

Materials you will need:

Fabric - Choose a fabric that is thick and opaque. A tightly woven fabric, such as canvas or blackout lining, will work best.
Curtain rod or track
Curtain hooks or rings
Measuring tape
Scissors
Iron and ironing board

Instructions:

Measure the length and width of your window. Add 6 inches to both the width and height for hems. This will be the size of your fabric.
Cut your fabric to the size you measured. Iron the fabric to remove any wrinkles.
Fold the bottom hem of the fabric over by 2 inches and press. Fold the hem over again by 2 inches and press.
Stitch the hem in place close to the edge.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 to create the top hem.
Create pleats or gathers in the fabric, if desired. This will help to add fullness to the curtains and make them hang better.
Sew the curtain rod or track into the top hem of the curtains.
Hang the curtains and enjoy the darkness!

Tips:

For a more complete blackout, use a blackout lining behind your fabric.
You can also add a layer of insulation, such as batting or quilt batting, between the fabric and the lining.
If you are using a heavy fabric, you may need to use heavier-duty curtain hardware.
