How To Install Blackout Curtains Over Blinds

Blackout curtains are an excellent way to block out light and add privacy to any room. They can also be a great way to add style to your home decor. If you have existing blinds, you may be wondering if you can install blackout curtains over them. The answer is yes, you can! Here are the steps on how to do it:

Step 1: Gather your materials

You will need the following materials:

  • Blackout curtains
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pencil or fabric marker
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Curtain hooks or clips

Step 2: Measure your blinds

Measure the width and length of your blinds. Add 2 inches to the width and 4 inches to the length for the hem allowance. For example, if your blinds are 36 inches wide and 60 inches long, you will need to purchase blackout curtains that are 38 inches wide and 64 inches long.

Step 3: Cut the blackout curtains

Cut the blackout curtains to the desired size. Be sure to add the hem allowance to the width and length of the curtains. For example, if your blinds are 36 inches wide and 60 inches long, you will need to cut the blackout curtains to 38 inches wide and 64 inches long.

Step 4: Hem the blackout curtains

Fold the raw edges of the blackout curtains over by 1 inch and press with an iron. Fold the edges over again by 1 inch and press again. Sew the hem in place using a sewing machine or needle and thread.

Step 5: Install the blackout curtains

There are two ways to install blackout curtains over blinds:

  1. Option 1: You can use curtain hooks or clips to hang the blackout curtains from the top of the blinds.
  2. Option 2: You can sew the blackout curtains directly to the blinds.

Option 1: Install blackout curtains using curtain hooks or clips

This is the easiest way to install blackout curtains over blinds. Simply attach the curtain hooks or clips to the top of the blinds and then hang the blackout curtains from the hooks or clips.

Option 2: Sew blackout curtains directly to blinds

This method is more permanent than using curtain hooks or clips. To sew the blackout curtains to the blinds, simply place the blackout curtains on top of the blinds and sew them together around the edges.
