How To Clean Vinyl Shower Curtain

Vinyl shower curtains are a budget-friendly and water-resistant option for the bathroom. They come in clear or frosted form, can be printed with multiple colors and patterns, and are easy to maintain. However, if they are not cleaned regularly, they can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Fortunately, cleaning a vinyl shower curtain is a simple task that only requires a few basic cleaning supplies.

What You'll Need:

  • Mildew-killing cleaning solution
  • Sponge or soft cloth
  • Bucket or sink
  • Hot water
  • Optional: Baking soda or white vinegar

Instructions:

  1. Remove the shower curtain: Unhook the shower curtain from the rings and take it down.
  2. Rinse the curtain: Hold the shower curtain under a stream of hot water to rinse off any loose dirt or debris.
  3. Apply the cleaning solution: Spray or pour the mildew-killing cleaning solution onto the shower curtain. Use a sponge or soft cloth to spread the solution evenly over the entire surface of the curtain.
  4. Let it sit: Allow the cleaning solution to sit on the shower curtain for the amount of time specified on the product label. This will give the solution time to kill the mildew and bacteria.
  5. Scrub lightly: Once the solution has had time to sit, use a sponge or soft cloth to gently scrub the shower curtain. Focus on areas where mildew or soap scum is visible.
  6. Rinse again: Rinse the shower curtain thoroughly with hot water to remove any remaining cleaning solution or debris.
  7. Optional: Deodorize with baking soda or vinegar: If desired, you can sprinkle baking soda or white vinegar over the shower curtain and let it sit for a few hours to help deodorize it.
  8. Rinse one last time: Rinse the shower curtain one final time with hot water to remove any remaining baking soda or vinegar.
  9. Hang the shower curtain: Rehang the shower curtain and allow it to air dry completely before using it again.

Tips:

  • For best results, clean your vinyl shower curtain every week or two.
  • If your shower curtain is particularly dirty or has stubborn mildew stains, you may need to soak it in a bleach solution before washing it with a regular cleaning solution.
  • Never use bleach on a colored shower curtain, as it may damage the color.
  • If you have a plastic shower curtain liner, you can clean it with the same method as the vinyl shower curtain.
