How Do You Hem Curtains?

Hemming curtains adds a touch of sophistication and completes their appearance. Determine the length where your curtains fall and then the hem allowance before hemming. Follow these steps for a clean, professional finish:

Step 1: Measure and Mark

Lay the curtain flat and fold it to your desired length. Iron the crease to maintain a precise hemline. Use tailor's chalk or a marking pencil to draw a line parallel to the folded edge. This is your hemline guide. Use another line parallel to the hemline, usually 1-2 inches above it, to indicate where to fold up for the hem.

Step 2: Fold and Pin

Fold the curtain up along the hemline and press the fold flat. Fold it up again along the folded line and into the curtain. Pin both layers together, ensuring the hem is even and secure.

Step 3: Blind Stitch

Thread your sewing machine with a thread that matches your curtains. Use a blind stitch foot, which allows the needle to enter very close to the curtain fold. Stitch just inside the hem's folded edge, so the stitches are almost invisible when viewed from the front.

Step 4: Reinforce Corners (Optional)

For added durability, especially for heavier fabrics or frequently opened curtains, reinforce the corners. Unfold the hem at each corner and create a small diagonal cut. Fold the hem back in place and stitch across the diagonal cut.

Step 5: Press and Hang
