How To Measure Curtain Size

1. Determine the type of curtains you want

There are two main types of curtains: rod-pocket curtains and grommet curtains. Rod-pocket curtains have a sewn-in pocket at the top that slides onto a curtain rod. Grommet curtains have metal rings sewn into the top of the curtain that slide onto a rod.

The type of curtain you choose will determine how you measure for length.

2. Measure the width of the window

To measure the width of the window, use a tape measure to measure the distance from the left edge of the window frame to the right edge of the window frame.

If you're planning on hanging the curtains outside the window frame, add 6-12 inches to the width of the window.

3. Measure the length of the curtains

The length of the curtains will depend on the type of curtains you choose and how you want them to hang.

For rod-pocket curtains: Measure the distance from the top of the curtain rod to where you want the curtains to end. Add 6 inches to this measurement.

For grommet curtains: Measure the distance from the top of the curtain rod to where you want the curtains to end. Add 3 inches to this measurement.

If you want the curtains to puddle on the floor, add 6-12 inches to the length of the curtains.

4. Add extra fabric for fullness

When you're measuring for curtains, it's important to add extra fabric for fullness. This will help the curtains to hang gracefully and look more professional.

For most curtains, you'll want to add 1.5-2 times the width of the window to the width of the curtains.
