How Do You Make Blackout Curtains
Blackout curtains are a great way to block out light and create a dark, relaxing environment. They are perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, and home theaters. But blackout curtains can be expensive, so why not make your own? It's actually quite easy to do, and you can customize them to fit your needs and decor.
Materials:
- Fabric: You will need a heavy, opaque fabric that will block out light. Some good choices include blackout lining fabric, velvet, or canvas.
- Thread: Choose a thread that matches the color of your fabric.
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Sewing machine
- Iron and ironing board
- Curtain rod and brackets
Instructions:
- Measure the window you want to cover. Add 6 inches to the width and 12 inches to the length for the hem.
- Cut two pieces of fabric to the desired size.
- Fold the top and bottom edges of each piece of fabric over by 1 inch and press. Fold over again by 1 inch and press again. Topstitch the hems in place.
- Place the two pieces of fabric together, right sides facing. Pin around the edges, leaving a 12-inch opening along one side.
- Sew around the edges, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.
- Turn the curtain right side out and press. Topstitch around the edges to secure the hems.
- Hang the curtain on the curtain rod.
Tips:
- If you are using a very heavy fabric, you may need to use a heavier thread and a larger needle.
- To make the curtains more effective at blocking out light, you can add a layer of blackout lining to the back of the fabric.
- You can also add blackout curtains to existing curtains by sewing them together.
